This is NOT a situation where hearts will be broken if the kitty gets turned intoa shelter instead of being declawed. This is a person who wants to get a kitty, and is already wanting to make plans to declaw it. I'm sorry, but my conscience won't allow me to sit and say nothing. Maybe she should just get a fish, eh??? Or maybe she should go to the shelter and pick out a cat who has already been declawed, but then was still dumped at the shelter (why - because of inappropriate elimination or biting perhaps? ask shelter workers why the majority of declawed cats are given up...)
I know that you don't want arguing on this board. If the original post was written because the owner had to make a choice between declawing or giving up the cat, I'd say my piece and then shut up. But I can't sit back and watch people tell her that there is nothing wrong with chopping off a cat's toes, when she doesn't even OWN the cat yet. I know that many people think that declawing cats is just the normal thing to do.. I'm trying to point out that it's not. There is a reason that it is ILLEGAL in other countries, and there is a reason that it is considered ABUSE in other countries. And she should know that. Maybe she should just get a stuffed cat.
OK - forget it. I'm just going to shut up. It just makes me too angry to see people telling her it's ok to declaw, even tho she doesn't even HAVE the cat yet and there are NO extenuating circumstances at this time. It just makes me too angry, and too disappointed in people.
