Everyone has their own opion of what is best for their animals. I had my cat declawed over two years ago. She is just as active and lovable as ever. As for defense, if you watch cats fight they fight with their back paws. She still climbs trees and stretches her paws the same as she would if she would be scratching a post or my furniture.
Just do your own research, talk to your vet and make your own decision as to what you want to do.
