Sometimes they get over that as they get older. One of my 6 year olds finally stays out for company - she took a long time. I never force mine to interact, the outome has never been good around here. Some cats are naturally more cautious around strangers, others are company greeters. I have the most trouble with my Siamese; my Devons love everyone, even screaming children! The Devon/Siamese mixes are also fearless people-cats.
