I have a Sony DCR-TRV 140, and I was also having problems with my firewire or dv output. After trying many different firewire cards and cables, I wondered if it was maybe not the computer but my camera that was the problem.
The Sony Store noticed that one of the firewire pins was bent in an odd direction.
Two weeks later, I can now transfer videos flawlessly to my PC.
