: Hi Pat,
: In March I am taking a trip to Ireland. I will be spending several days in Dublin, and have 4 days to travel the as much of Ireland as I can without it being too overwhelming. What are the must see stops? I have tired to plan places to go, but I'm not sure what towns to stay in or see. Can you please make recommendations to my itinerary. Thank you!
: Monday:
: - Dublin to Kilkenny (2 hours, 17 minutes drive time)
: - Kilkenny to Waterford (1 hour)
: Tuesday
: - Waterford to Limerick (2 hour) [pass through Tipperary]
: - Limerick to Shannon (40 minutes)
: - Shannon to Clare (45 minutes)
: Wednesday
: - Clare to Galway (1 hours, 30 minutes)
: Thursday
: - Galway to Dublin (4 hours)
Dear Karen,
Your itinerary plan is not too overwhelming - however, it is a little puzzing in parts.
Let's take it day by day:
Monday:
- Dublin to Kilkenny (2 hours, 17 minutes drive time)
- Kilkenny to Waterford (1 hour)
COMMENTS: While these computer driving times are good guidelines, the actual driving time by a human being can vary - due to weather, traffic, congestion in towns, and traffic around Dublin airport. The Kilkenny-Waterford estimate of one hour is pretty accurate, unless there are roadworks on the approach to Waterford which there were the last time I drove through, and I believe are still there. So always allow extra time!
As for what to see, be sure to plan time for the delightful river towns south of Kilkenny City en route to Waterford - Bennettsbridge, Thomastown, Inistioge etc. See my section on The Southeast.
Tuesday
- Waterford to Limerick (2 hour) [pass through Tipperary]
COMMENTS: This is probably more like 3 hours. Plan to stop at Cahir to see the castle.
- Limerick to Shannon (40 minutes)
COMMENTS: This is actually more like 20 minutes to a half-hour as it is a good, fast road.
- Shannon to Clare (45 minutes)
COMMENTS: This is where I am puzzled. Shannon Airport is in Co. CLARE. Clare is a county not a town - where in Co. Clare are you aiming to go?
Wednesday
- Clare to Galway (1 hours, 30 minutes)
COMMENTS: Again, it depends on where in Co. Clare you will be coming from.
Thursday
- Galway to Dublin (4 hours)
COMMENTS: This driving stimate is fairly accurate, but can be longer if you encounter traffic on the approach to Dublin, especially on week days when there are a lot of trucks. What time is your flight?
