I am very much interested in obtaining a true black opal (not a triplicate). I want a finished stone, not free form, any color variety. How much do I have to spend for a good stone?
My question, though, is: I am confused as to what a "fire opal" is. From gem books, my understanding is that a "fire opal" is a (usually) red stone, that is faceted, somewhat like a topaz, for instance. Yet I recently purchased what was described as a "fire opal" but which looks like a true white opal (to me) with great flashes of red/orange fire. It is a lovely stone, but what, in fact, is a "fire opal"?
