Storhzou,
Nice career plan. When you're ready to "look around" just let me know!
When I was a DBA back in the 80's, our BIG career decision was should we go Relational with DB2, Hierarchical with IMS, or Network Architecture with IDMS. I chose IDMS. Maybe that's why I'm a recruiter now Things are surely a lot different today. I just glanced thru an article this evening where the author proclaimed "There are only 3 database companies left: Oracle, Microsoft, and IBM." What happened to Sybase and Informix? They're down, but are they out? From the recruiter point of view, Oracle is by far the most popular database today. I just checked our "open jobs" listings, and we have 5 times as many openings for Oracle talent than we do for Sql Server talent. That's today. Three years ago, if a good data person could have spelled Sybase correctly, I could have gotten them 6 nice job offers. Next year? Who knows. MS is pretty strong these days. Maybe Sql Server will rise to the top. What's the point to this long reply? Well here it is: Become a Wizard / Guru in the database or company that really turns you on. If you love Oracle, learn Oracle. If you're a Bill Gates follower, join the Sql Server crowd etc etc etc. BUT... try to focus more on Relational Database Techniques and less on specific technologies. Try to really understand Database Tuning, not just Tuning for Oracle. Learn Data Normalization, not just Normalizing for DB2. Get good at Referential Integrity, not just Reference Integrity for Sql Server databases. Database companies come and go. Database techniques will be around for the long run.
